This is a specialized workshop for professionals who provide positive behavioral health interventions or therapeutic adventure programming for participants in schools, treatment centers, detention centers and other specialized programs. This workshop focuses on developing the skills needed to implement adventure activities within a therapeutic setting, specifically in ongoing support groups. Topics include utilizing the Facilitated Wave, adventure that is trauma-informed, assessment tools such as the Stages of Group Development, social-emotional learning, and front-loading, framing and facilitating adventure activities for positive behavioral health outcomes.

Participants will:

  • Use various adventure activities and therapeutic adventure best practices to help group members build trust and successfully manage conflicts as they move through stages of group development.

  • Practice appropriately selecting, sequencing, and processing activities to meet specific positive behavioral health intervention objectives.

  • Identify how to evaluate and understand the dynamics of the group’s experience to determine and focus on relevant discussion topics so learning is personal and has present and future relevance.

  • Learn strategies to lessen participant’s dependency of leader’s control of their behaviors so they may learn to make responsible decisions and manage their own behaviors.

PLEASE NOTE: IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS WORKSHOP FOR GRADUATE CREDITS THROUGH PSU, IT IS IN THEIR SYSTEM AS ADVENTURE WITH YOUTH AT RISK (COURSE #5255) UNTIL THE 2025-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR. YOU CAN ONLY THE SAME COURSE NUMBER ONCE FOR GRAD CREDITS.

Workshop Information:

  • $550 – Includes registration, workshop manual and lunch during workshop.

  • Number of days: 3

  • Workshop hours: 8:30am-4:00pm

  • Graduate credits: Participants can earn 2 credits for taking the workshop and completing a Reflection Paper. Additional 2 credits can be earned by also completing a Guided Project. More graduate credit information can be found HERE. Additional per credit fee applies. IF YOU ARE TAKING THIS WORKSHOP FOR GRADUATE CREDITS THROUGH PSU, IT IS IN THEIR SYSTEM AS ADVENTURE WITH YOUTH AT RISK (COURSE #5255) UNTIL THE 2025-2026 ACADEMIC YEAR.   • Participants who are licensed teachers in MA can earn 24 PDPs after completing this workshop and submitting a Reflection Paper for additional fee. Email registration@pa.org for more information.

  • Please register more than two weeks in advance to ensure the workshop will have enough participants to run as scheduled.

  • Workshop registration cancellation policies: Cancellations less than 2 weeks prior to a workshop start date will result in 50% refund of tuition cost. No shows without cancellation notice will forfeit all tuition cost paid.
