Therapeutic Adventure programming workshops

Our Therapeutic Adventure Programming (TAP) workshops are designed to provide professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively use adventure-based approaches in therapeutic settings. These workshops are ideal for anyone looking to deepen their expertise in therapeutic adventure programming and achieve meaningful outcomes for their clients. While each workshop stands alone, participants are encouraged to follow the recommended progression: TAP → DTAP → ITAP.

By participating in all three workshops, professionals gain a comprehensive understanding of therapeutic adventure from foundational principles to advanced application. The progression builds on each stage of learning: TAP introduces the "what" of therapeutic adventure, DTAP explores the "so what" by connecting meaning and designing interventions, and ITAP focuses on the "now what" through hands-on practice and application. Together, these workshops create a cohesive learning experience, deepening participants' skills and confidence to effectively use adventure-based programming to foster positive behavioral health outcomes in their practice.

All three workshops align with core competencies required by the Association for Experiential Education (AEE) Therapeutic Adventure Professional Group (TAPG). They can be applied toward training hours for professional certifications, including the Certified Therapeutic Adventure Specialist (CTAS) and Certified Clinical Adventure Therapist (CCAT).

Therapeutic Adventure Programming (TAP)

Level: Introductory | Focus: The what – What is Therapeutic Adventure Programming?

This foundational workshop introduces participants to the principles of therapeutic adventure programming, a dynamic approach to promoting positive behavioral health outcomes. Ideal for those new to adventure programming, this workshop explores how adventure activities can be integrated into therapeutic settings—with or without a challenge course.

Designing Therapeutic Adventure Programming (DTAP)

Level: Intermediate | Focus: So What – Synthesizing and Connecting Meaning

Build on your foundational knowledge with this workshop, which emphasizes designing intentional and engaging therapeutic group interventions. DTAP is designed for professionals with some experience in adventure facilitation who are working or planning to work in therapeutic settings.

Implementing Therapeutic Adventure Programming (ITAP)

Level: Advanced | Focus: Now What – Practice & Application

This hands-on workshop helps participants refine their therapeutic facilitation techniques to adapt adventure activities for specific behavioral health outcomes. Designed for experienced practitioners, ITAP focuses on applying skills to tailor facilitation and programming to meet the needs of groups in therapeutic settings. While prior participation in TAP and DTAP is recommended, ITAP is perfect for those ready to advance their practice.

designing therapeutic adventure programming (online)

Schools and youth programs are stretched thin when it comes to serving students who need extra support. Group work – such as boys’/girls’ groups, lunch bunches, or Tier 2 social support groups – can be a great way to provide targeted SEL services to more of our students. The group process is a powerful way to help our students develop. In this online workshop, participants will apply therapeutic adventure programming concepts and strategies to designing active and engaging therapeutic group interventions. Prior adventure facilitation experience HIGHLY recommended.
